What is a mulching mower?
Mulching mowers are not necessarily a category of mower, but any type of mower that can mulch grass.
Shredding is the process of cutting and shredding grass into very small pieces so that it can be reused in the soil. Unlike conventional mowers, which collect the clippings using a bagging system, the mulchers distribute the clippings evenly across the lawn. If the grass is shredded finely enough, it will naturally penetrate the soil where it will decompose on the surface under the influence of micro-organisms. The decomposed cuttings then return nutrients to the environment for use by other plants.
If you are looking for the best mulching mower, the first step is to find one that is compatible with the best mulching blades. This also applies to most gas-powered lawnmowers, where the user can replace the blades.
What are the characteristics of a lawnmower?
Unlike intuitive thinking, mulching mowers resemble any other type because they are essentially the same.
The only difference is that the mulching mower (e.g. Honda hrr) uses a 3-in-1 blade or universal blade instead of the usual 2-in-1 or High Lift blade. A universal blade is usually curved along the metal and has an irregular edge with many teeth. In addition, they can be arranged in a cross, with each leaf centred and perpendicular to the other.
Extra cutting edges on the mulching blade provide better contact with the grass and make it possible to chop the grass finer.
The figure below shows two different sheets for comparison. As you can see, the shredder blade looks much rougher than the standard shredder blade.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the mulching knife?
Mulching knives are called universal knives or 3-in-1 knives because they can be used for the 3 tasks of mulching, bag unloading and cutting.
They differ from the standard 2-in-1 buckets, which are limited to just two functions, namely unloading and bagging. Standard 2-in-1 blades are also known as high-lift blades because they provide a greater air flow in the mower deck, giving the grass and clippings more upward pressure.
Here are the pros and cons of the mulching knife:
- It crushes the grass into small pieces, preventing the cut grass from accumulating on the lawn.
- Can be used for all three types of grass recycling
- Chips that are rejected will be shallow and return nutrients to the soil faster than chips from a conventional leaf.
- Reduces climbing and makes it more difficult to take the grass off the slide.

The best glitter knife
When inspecting the following blades, check that they are suitable for your specific lawnmower by first checking the properties of your lawnmower.
Three things to consider are the length of the blade, the shape of the hole in the middle of the blade and the number of blades. For example, if you need three blades, you need to buy three blades! And no, you can’t mix the blades on the mower because it balances them.
We recommend purchasing these knives via Amazon because of their extremely flexible return policy. If you find that one of these blades does not fit your lawnmower, you can get your money back quickly and free of charge thanks to their A to Z warranty policy.
When evaluating these blades, you should understand that the vast majority of negative comments come from people who have bought the wrong blades for their lawnmower, not from the quality/performance of the blades themselves.
Oregon Crocodile knives
Oregon produces crocodile knives in all sizes. So find the blades that match your specific lawnmower. Regardless of size, all Gator knives are made of hardened and tempered steel, making them sharper and longer.
They all have a patented design that makes it possible to mulch the grass well. Their unique shape makes it easy to mow even the thickest and tallest grass and you’ll notice a big difference with the blades on your mower.
Feedback from customers about Amazon should speak for itself.
MaxPower 331713X Grinding disc
Designed for most lawnmowers, including Poulan, Craftsman and Husqvarna. The 331713x is an American-made mulching knife that shreds grass finely and efficiently.
They reduce the buoyancy needed to catch grass between the stems for a finer cut. Although they do not have a drip lock, you can easily find one on the internet or in the garden shops.
Don’t forget that most lawnmowers need two blades.
Arnold Universal Mulch Knife
Arnold 21 Universal Mulch Blades are almost universal and will probably fit your mower. They even contain several adapters that fit all hole sizes.
A few teeth on the blade is the scariest thing your grass has ever seen, and the super-strong metal is sure to last longer than your blade. A critic called it the best knife I’ve ever used.
MaxPower universal mulch leaf
As you can see above, these blades look great, and even if you never see them while mowing, their appearance will match their performance. With three large teeth on each side of the blade – each with extra sharp edges – the cutting area is much larger than on the blades of your standard mower. This blade comes with a large number of different rings to easily fit any standard hole in the lawnmower.
Other chopping knives
If none of these blades are compatible with your lawnmower, here are some tips to help you choose the right mulching blade.
First locate the model number of the mower and find the mower specification. The three most important characteristics are the length of the blade, the hole in the middle of the blade and the number of blades. Some lawnmowers use round holes, while others may use star-shaped holes, as shown above. Finally, find a knife that meets all these characteristics. Of course, if you like one knife, but your lawnmower needs two knives instead of one, you can just buy two.
Here is a list of Amazon’s popular shredding knives to suit all brands.
If you don’t like some of what you see there, try searching for the following term on Amazon: (insert cut mark) a mulching knife or (insert cut mark) a 3-in-1 mark.
We recommend Amazon for its extremely lenient repatriation policy. If you find that a particular blade does not fit your mower, the return is quick and free!
As lawnmower blades come in different sizes and hole shapes, you may need a blade adapter to use the desired blade. Here is a list of blade adapters for the most common lawnmowers. If you want to use a knife adapter, watch the following video to learn how to connect it to the knives
In short, there is no better mulching mower, but there are mulching kits that can turn any mower into a mulching mower. These kits normally come with two shredding blades and an exhaust plug to ensure that the dirt is returned between the blades for a finer cut.
First you need to find a lawnmower that is suitable for your specific garden needs. You can find your best option by using different sources on our website. We recommend that you push a small lawnmower, drive a medium-sized lawnmower and, for a lawnmower with a turning circle, drive a large lawnmower. Once you have chosen the mower you want, look for a suitable mulching kit to turn it into a lawnmower.
