What is a self-propelled lawnmower?

While this can be considered a cost effective fatigue for particularly small and relatively flat lawns with shorter grass, there is not a single piece of green that a lawnmower with unprecedented performance cannot handle. Their single-cylinder combustion engines are available in two- or four-stroke versions, which run exclusively on petrol or, in some increasingly rare cases, on kerosene. Among the most popular brands of lawnmowers are Husqvarna, Snapper, Troy-Bilt and many others. These direct successors to conventional drum mowers are rugged, robust and durable, making them the only option for the timely maintenance of larger areas with a smooth, even cut from the first to the last tree. Until the relatively recent boom in the production of electric lawnmowers, the gas mower was the most bizarre advance in lawn care technology ever seen by a generation growing up with non-powered drum mowers.

In a market where three generations of lawnmower technology coexist with a relatively equal value of use, the advantages of stable performance and durability over drum mowers or electric mowers are that they do not have the heavy weight to move around. A mower of any size is optimal for lawns on ⅓ acres, especially for mowers with thicker, stranger, stubborn grass, and going up and down a steeper slope, but physically weak owners should think twice before choosing a push or self-propelled model, and keep in mind that pushing the heaviest mower on half an acre or more is a terrifying proposition. The robot, the zero turn or any other CNG is better supported than walking on your back.

What are the benefits of a self-propelled lawnmower?

If you’re considering buying a lawnmower, carefully weigh the benefits against the undeniable benefits.

First of all, there’s something nostalgic about the feeling of gasoline. These lawnmowers start with an impressive roar and rumble that takes me back to when I was old enough to look after my family’s lawn in upstate New York every summer and wake that steel monster up for the first time with a hard handle on the rope. Nobody has reached a certain age, and that cannot be compared to the shocks of the metal in life and the roaring in response.

Apart from sentimentality, it is a universal lawnmower. As long as you have fuel in the tank, enough oil, a sharp knife and good spark plugs, you should enjoy maximum efficiency and effectiveness until the job is done. Considering that almost all lawnmowers owe their solid construction to their natural strength, it is a very comprehensive and economical way to maintain your lawn for many years. …something like that.

Unfortunately, that’s where the disadvantage begins: Supplying a lawnmower season after season means you can easily take care of the three main types of lawn. In addition to sharpening the blade at least twice a season, owners should consider refilling the oil once or twice a month, cleaning the air filter and replacing the spark plugs several times every 12 months. As mentioned earlier, throttle mowers are also the most difficult to push, so walk-behind mowers are only practical to a certain extent, before the more expensive phase of driving, tractor, zero turn or robotic mower is accepted.

These versatile machines also leave a lot of small traces behind. Lawnmowers produce just over 100 decibels of noise during operation, emit smoke clouds that turn into toxic contaminants when they burn oil and gas and eventually devour an entire storage area.

How do I select a self-propelled lawnmower?

Apart from everything we discussed, how do you choose a petrol lawnmower? Start with roulette.

No, seriously. The size of your lawn and the way it is planted will greatly limit your ideal candidates to meet the constant demands you see. As a matter of fact..:

, IF YOU HAVE LESS THAN HALF AN ACRE……

To a certain extent you can do without a motorized lawnmower. The many vertically rotating blades of the 18-inch drum mower are ideal for small, flat lawns, although maintaining a medium-sized yard can quickly become a routine job compared to how an electric or gas driven drum mower can speed up the task. Expect to pay more for an electric lawnmower at first, but you can then sit back and estimate how much money you will save by reducing maintenance until the batteries are stored (assuming you don’t choose the corded version), sharpening the blades at least twice a year and watering the mower deck between mowers. If you prefer a lawnmower, choose the right size; a wider deck and longer cutting blade will turn more grass at each pass, but larger mowers can manoeuvre uncomfortably in tight spaces.

19, IF YOU HAVE AN ACRE TO AN ACRE…

It’s only fair to push the lawnmower all the way to the end. It may seem like an invigorating workout in the sun, but you have too much ground to use your time or investment efficiently. Currently, a self-propelled gas or electric lawnmower is undoubtedly the road to success. Whether your company prefers two- or four-wheel drive, your mower’s transmission drives it over large areas and hilly terrain with minimal effort. Basically, you are there to guide the progress and, if necessary, to stop it temporarily. When shopping, don’t forget that the large wheels make it easy to turn and move in tall grass and bushes.

, IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN AN ACRE….

No lawnmower is suitable for large jobs if you want everything to be maintained within a reasonable amount of time. That’s why no electric lawnmower can boast a ridiculously long cord or a seemingly unlimited range throughout the day without interruption. You need a mower with a constant force that never gets up and an endurance that literally takes you on a journey until you’ve mowed all the blades you want to mow.

I think you have three realistic options. Lawnmowers have massive cutter bars and often considerable power, which is fully compatible with the toughest terrain. As a bonus you can install spacers or dozer blades on some models for occasional extra work. Not only is the zero-turn mower as manoeuvrable as the largest open area, but it is also the ideal tool for maintaining large areas full of trees and other obstacles, thanks to the eponymous turning circle, which does not make the area as fast, clean and dense as the fastest, cleanest and densest mower on any edge of the lawn. Finally, if you don’t have so many obstacles to mow and a huge sea of grass, a trailed mower combined with a tractor or ATV can reduce the time it takes to cover the entire lawn. You can even change the position of multiple blades to better mow the uncomfortable rest areas that a conventional mower couldn’t mow satisfactorily.

What are the different types of self-propelled lawnmowers?

PRESS RELEASE

A petrol machine on a growing lawn is exactly what it looks like: a petrol machine that moves strictly to where the driver pushes it. The result is an incredible outdoor workout where you will experience the famous power density and unparalleled cut quality of these models. He walks and mows exactly where you move him, and only at the speed you generate.

The boss on the other side? Walking around with the heaviest type of mower becomes difficult and tiring when the yard to be worked on is about half an hectare in the shade, especially if the work involves many hills.

GO TO

Sometimes even a large ride-on mower or a zero-turn mower doesn’t seem perfect for mowing a busy suburban yard, commercial green spaces or a large landscaped lawn. If you have an ATV or a tractor, a throttle mower can make a sophisticated cut across a wide strip at a much more appropriate speed. You can even complement your mower with a variety of professionally designed and manufactured tractor attachments to meet a wide range of specific landscaping needs.

A warning: Don’t forget the lawn, which is laid out along certain delicate contours. Don’t forget that you can adjust the polygonal blades of the trailed mower and experiment to find the right configuration for uneven terrain.

SELF-PROPELLED

A self-propelled lawnmower is a great advantage when working in a fairly large, open garden at the top of the ridge, where a running lawnmower is still very useful, at least twice if the grass is very thick or has grown to an absurd height. This is a prerequisite for safe mowing on a slope, as it is physically more difficult to push a large gas engine up or down the slope all day long than to mow, and all it does is invite you to avoid a rotating mower if the blades at the ankles are twisted when going down the slope.

Even discreet intersections are kept short by the self-propelled mower because the quality model has a smooth forward motion and a tendency for large decks and large blades that make it easy to remove large areas of grass at once, without the stubborn stress and difficult weeds that have always slowed down the advance. Unfortunately, the comfort of a self-propelled lawnmower is more expensive than that of a gas-fired lawnmower. This reduces the realistic appeal of this type of mowing on areas overgrown with trees, flowerbeds and other obstacles, or on particularly narrow plots, as normally a larger mowing area and constant movement can impede manoeuvrability in narrow cabins.

CHEVALIER

There is no more convenient way to mow your lawn from about ⅓ to ½ than with your regular lawnmower. However, you don’t have to take advantage of the power and speed or the same cutting width as a lawn tractor. However, they are exceptionally quiet and surprisingly easy to drive. A good joke is fun. Most are equipped with a rear engine and a single blade deck, ideal for working on gentle slopes on larger lawns, if you don’t mind using a narrower, slower mower to extend the work a little.

TWO-STROKE ENGINES

I have to be honest: There is virtually no reason to own a two-stroke lawnmower if a four-stroke engine is perfected on every possible slope.

Two-stroke motors, mostly used in trimmers and trimmers, are designed for torque. However, they tend not to deliver their most effective performance until the fuel explodes. By simply mixing the special oil additive with the fuel in a certain ratio, the engine will remain well lubricated and the oil will burn along with the fuel during use, producing annoying smoke. It is an inefficient, excessively noisy and maintenance-intensive method of grass maintenance, but at least two-stroke engines are known to be lightweight and durable.

4-STROKE ENGINES

In the meantime, the four-stroke engine will do all the work that can be done cleaner and more efficiently.

While the two-stroke engine is designed to concentrate on torque and build up impressive power, the four-stroke engine pumps the same amount into a continuous current. By separating oil and gas instead of pre-mixing them, it burns cleaner and more efficiently, making it a more durable engine than its half-dimensional counterpart that requires little maintenance before and after use. Weight reduction is the only advantage of a two-stroke system.

What are the release mechanisms for self-propelled lawnmowers?

KICK-OFF

Most lawnmowers use a hard-wired kickback starter and control it fast enough to reverse the engine. Of course this requires some effort and can be a bit frustrating for disabled users, but it also turns out to be the cheapest access mechanism for manufacturers. You need to fill the engine with an extra air-fuel mixture by opening the valve for a cold start of the reversing mechanism. This makes it easier to run the engine, but you have to release the throttle as soon as the engine is hot.

ELECTRIC START

The electric push button start is easier to start than a lawnmower with a manual starter. Although the mower is generally easier to operate, after a long winter it may take a little longer to make a cold start to the first day of mowing. If possible, choose a lawnmower that will stifle a particularly stubborn start.

ELECTRIC KEY

These triggers appeal to me as audible compensation for user error. While I appreciate the simplicity of the electric switch, I always remember that if I move or store a lawnmower, I accidentally turned off the engine with the wrong palm of my hand. Also, I’m afraid my grandson will accidentally turn it on when he tries to help Daddy in the barn with his curious little hands. The engine will only start electrically when the key is firmly secured to the ignition switch. Once everything is inserted, everything burns as planned. In the meantime, the magazine will certainly remain inactive.

What are the main characteristics to be considered?

Extra

Although I don’t consider these needs of a lawnmower useful, individually or in combination, they would certainly tend towards one particular model:

SHEETNEW DEFINITION

Sometimes it is also called the blade brake clutch system. The blade override allows the user to completely cut the power to the cutter deck without killing the engine, in case you need to let go of the handle, if something suddenly slows your path or if you experience a moment of unevenness during mowing. This will really increase the price of a lawnmower, but there are a few features that I recommend just like this one.

ADJUSTABLE SPEED

One speed is never suitable for every mowing task. That’s why it makes sense to choose a self-propelled mower with adjustable tilt. If you go too fast, the blades should not cut the grass as cleanly as possible if the grass cover is briefly interrupted. In other cases, it may be the height or thickness of the grass, which makes a fast pace not only inefficient, but simply unreasonable.

ADJUSTABLE STEERING WHEEL

The ease of use and safety of a lawnmower is often a question of the physical ability to work with it according to its construction. This certainly allows the height of the steering wheel to be adjusted to a position that offers the ideal force and thrust in relation to the driver’s position.

DECK WAX

Every owner must be crazy not to appreciate this feature. If you are working according to the instructions, before mowing, when the mower is not in the parking and locking position, simply connect a normal garden hose, quickly connect the hose and remove it from the opening on the mower deck, turn on the water and start the engine of the mower deck in the upper mowing position to quickly remove any dirt and debris.

FRONT WHEELS

Conventional wheels mounted on the state axle restrict their movement in two directions – forwards and backwards. This results in a difficult turn when lifting the front of the mower. Some lawnmowers are enhanced by this classic mobility standard with swivel wheels at the front, which allow you to turn in any direction without having to stand on a strange wheel at the end of the ride or when you need to move around flowers, trees, plants or rocks.

Power

Home use

I would recommend a lawnmower for almost any farm over a quarter and a half hectare. The weight and often the wide enough deck can make a mower too heavy and uncomfortable to be used in many narrow yards, especially those filled with mowing barriers nearby, but the constant torque and efficiency of a wide mower shaft become gods where a traditional, engine free lawnmower starts to feel strong enough for your space. A self-propelled or ride-on mower with an area of ½ to 1 hectare is the ideal choice to reduce downtime and labour costs. The horse-drawn carriage is most suitable for farms of one to two hectares. For lawnmowers covering more than two hectares, the only realistic and practical method is a trailed lawnmower attached to a tractor or ATV.

Trucks

This is where gas mowers have a long-term advantage over their electric cousins: No electric lawnmower manufactured today can deliver the same clean cutting performance as a petrol engine. While battery-powered electric mowers are limited to an impressive cutting time of around 70 minutes, gas mowers can usually work for hours before the juice is dry, without knowing the power of the battery-powered electric models because their charges are being discharged.

Commercial

Before you decide which type of mower is best for you, you should store your equipment for one day of mowing in an efficient time frame without compromising your end result with economical maintenance. A gas mower may not even be the smartest option; given the higher monthly maintenance costs, it may even make more sense to purchase an electric mower or even a drum breaker. Also take into account the size and condition of your lawn. Of course, no turf is too thick for a mower, but mowing too much spread grass with a push mower instead of a self-propelled, motorised or even towed model can be a waste of everyone’s time, even if the mower itself costs less than the other options.

Model

If he can’t move around comfortably in the space he needs to work, you may not have the right mower for your property. For large lawns with obstacles such as trees and gardens in the middle of the lawn, a zero-turn mower or bicycle mower can be a much more convenient and accurate tool for trimming kerbs and mowing than a push or self-propelled mower. If you decide to stay on the mower, do not underestimate the importance of turning the front wheel to make turning easier and faster than lifting the front wheel several times and turning it over and over again.

Easy to use

In general, three characteristics speak more than any other in favour of the convenience of a lawnmower:

PUSK

That’s an advantage of electric motors that I can’t ignore: They can be moved so easily and quickly. Of course, most lawnmowers will use the feedback system, but I can’t say with certainty that pressing the start button on a reliable mechanism costs absolutely nothing.

TREATMENT

Lawnmowers are naturally heavy, thanks to bulky engines, large blades and sturdy steel decks that can cope with the hard work for which they are designed. But if a petrol machine can absorb this classic torque with a particularly light chassis and a good centre of gravity for good manoeuvrability, then that’s the advantage.

SETTING

A height is almost never right. I need to be able to change at least four settings that can quickly adapt to high grass and uneven ground if necessary, preferably with a single lever to move all four wheels.

Safety features

No aspect of lawn care takes precedence over safety, period. If you know that there are slopes and hills on your lawn you should not push the mower; the advantage of a self-propelled mower is that it doesn’t have to be pushed awkwardly on a slope to avoid the risk of returning to the driver, and the automatic cut-off cuts off power if the driver loses control while driving by simply releasing the lever, pressing the button or flipping the switch. While it is wise not to attempt to adjust the height of the deck while the blade is in operation, many lawnmowers are now equipped with locks that prevent the deck from moving while the blade is in operation. In the meantime, I think that redefining the blade that kills the cutting force without stopping the engine is a prerequisite for safe operation in the event of a sudden malfunction, loss of mower control or the need to release the handle.

Bridge size

In addition to the most common types of driving, such as cornering and traction, which are categories in their own right, there are portable gas mowers with deck sizes ranging from 15 to 22 inches. In general, self-propelled lawnmowers are designed to work on the longest side of the range. Of course, the larger decks can mow any lawn 75% faster than the narrowest width, thanks to the ability to mow more than one stroke. It’s not always as profitable as it seems. A larger deck adds even more weight to the already heavy engine. This is the main reason why self-propelled lawnmowers can stay on the widest side: no thrust.

Don’t forget that large bridges, even in narrow courtyards full of obstacles, tend to be clumsy to manoeuvre, twist and turn over and over again.

Sod format

A push mower is sufficient for fairly large lawns, from ¼ to ⅓ tomorrow. Everything from half an hectare to an entire hectare requires a self-propelled or mobile lawnmower, just like any landscape full of hills and steep slopes. Between one and two hectares, driving or towing behind a lawnmower is almost the only viable option. If the surface area is larger than two hectares, only a trailed mower, attached to a tractor or ATV, will provide a cutting belt wide enough for an efficient cut.

Speed

Making quality saws from start to finish does not always mean that the blades have to be turned as quickly as possible. Many lawnmowers feature a motorcycle-style throttle lever built into the handlebars to increase or decrease engine speed to accelerate or slow the blade. If you are not satisfied with the quality of mowing in certain areas, or if you find that your mower is getting stuck in a heavier condition, carry out choke tests until you find the ideal place to mow.

Grass cutting capacity and quality

One of the most rewarding advantages of a gas-powered lawnmower is that the quality and capacity of mowing never decreases towards the end of the work, as sometimes happens when the battery of a battery-powered lawnmower reaches to its last legs. Even the smallest gas engines generate impressive power so their blades can cope without notoriously hard loads, neglected grass and strangely rough grass. In general one can expect two to seven horsepower (1.5 to 6.75 kilowatts). In most cases you will get the best results if you maintain a constant and sufficiently high engine speed, even if you don’t always start the engine at the highest revs.

Mulch or non-mulch

Mulching is not mandatory, but there are better ways to remove hard, thick grasses in a short period of time. The mulching lawnmower immediately converts the clippings into small, nutrient-rich particles, which it spreads over the lawn to feed it during mowing. Whether or not it fits into your lawn care program, it will deliver a healthy lawn.

Packaging

If you prefer to keep your lawn clean while mowing rather than mulching it, many gas mowers will mow it in a padded bag while you work. The only drawback is that, however convenient it may seem, you have to take a break at regular intervals to empty the leftovers.

Side discharge

Maybe you’re not interested in mulching and don’t really want to postpone the mowing by stopping to lay down the clippings. In this case, find a sidewinder. Instead of regrowing or collecting scattered grass, these mowers simply spread it out in small, clean rows so that it can be picked up and thrown away as you see fit.

Grass removal

You can process your clippings in different ways. Mulching recycles them into food supplements that are immediately put back on the lawn. Carefully keep them in the container until you take a break to get rid of them. The side discharge mowers spray them in clean rows on the side where they can be mounted at the end of the work. If you prefer to have all three options at your disposal, you can switch from one option to the other at will with the various combination mowers.

Height adjustment

I strongly advise against mowing the grass to less than 30% of its height. Cutting the grass too short weakens the grass, reduces resistance to disease and makes it more susceptible to dehydration in periods of high heat and drought. Your mower must have at least four and more to seven height settings. Don’t forget that a hairstyle at the right height ensures regular and healthy growth throughout the season. While it is not uncommon for manufacturers to equip their lawnmowers with an individual lever to adjust each wheel, I prefer to use a single device that can raise or lower all four wheels at the same time. This also makes it easier to adjust the height of the mower to compensate for uneven ground.

Cutting width

Lawnmowers that work on lawns are 15 to 22 inches wide. The wider bridge makes it possible to mow more in each lane and spend less time in the yard. It also means more weight to drive and less maneuverability – which is why self-propelled lawnmowers often measure around the 20-inch mark or higher. Compare the width of the deck with the floor it is supposed to cover.

Ignition method

In most cases, you can choose lawnmowers with three start options:

OUTPUT

These classic cord and handle starters are the cheapest in production and offer a price advantage over all other lawnmowers. Just pull the cord until the engine is running. Physically it’s a bit annoying, but it has a certain nostalgic appeal.

KEY

As easy as a lawnmower, but you have to expect to pay a little more. As the name suggests, just press the ignition and the spark mechanism will start the engine. However, be careful not to accidentally press a button and operate the mower at the wrong time.

KEY

If you have a push-button ignition, this is by far the best extra safety feature you can ask for. The engine will not tilt until you insert the key. A good choice if you’re worried about young children playing and accidentally driving a lawnmower.

Engine power

Lawnmower engines are manufactured as two- or four-stroke systems that generate two to seven hp (1.5-6.75 kilowatts) for each size. The more powerful engines produce more torque and power, resulting in higher cutting speeds for a smoother and more efficient cut, so you can maintain the grass without damaging it. While it is advisable to keep the speed as constant and high as possible to ensure clean and consistent cut quality, an adjustable throttle or field function allows you to slow down the mower’s progress through the grass, blade speed or both to ensure a stable mower that manicures the entire site evenly.

In view of the above, the choice of a two-stroke engine offers virtually no advantage, apart from its low weight. The two-stroke engine is designed to concentrate on torque, but to produce its peak power only during a breakthrough, not in a constant power current that produces a more durable and efficient four-stroke engine.

Front and rear wheel drive

Chances are your lawn just needs one or the other. Thanks to the relatively small wheels, front-wheel drive is ideal for relatively flat terrain. However, this makes the task difficult, requiring you to regularly stop the engine or tilt the mower backwards to lift and turn the wheels. The advantage of rear-wheel drive is not only that it is possible to work on slippery grass, but also that it can absorb unevenness in the ground thanks to the force generated by the rear wheel. Designed for high grass and bumpy, uneven terrain, the higher rear wheels make it easy to spot the rear-wheel drive mower.

Noise level

Guess what. Gas-powered lawnmowers are absurdly noisy. If you do not live in the country, where there is a mile or more between you and your nearest neighbour, you should limit yourself to a reasonable time of the day if you do not want someone to come and steal your spark plugs just to keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. Since most of them emit more than 100 decibels of sound when mowing, I strongly recommend the use of hearing protection. If harassment of your neighbours is an inevitable problem, if you just want some rest, I suggest you follow the mumbling of an electric lawnmower.

Pollution

Two-stroke mowers produce far more harmful contaminants than four-stroke models, because the two-stroke model requires a premix of oil and gasoline, which produces far more smoke during mowing than the four-stroke separation system.

Maintenance

The maintenance of a gas mower is simpler than that of a drum mower or an electric mower, but in any case the maintenance is divided into a fairly simple schedule. It should be noted that the new engine has to be crushed slowly, without running at full power for the first five hours:

NA 5 HOUR IN THE MORNING :
– change the oil after 25 hours : Air filter
Clean after 50 hours: Check spark plug and change oil
YEARS : You must replace the spark plug, fill the tank, clean or replace the air filter and change the oil at once.

Stop mowing if you notice unusual vibrations or noises. Turn off the power, check the blade and inspect the motor shaft. If the blade or motor shaft is damaged, replace the damaged parts before reusing the mower. If problems persist, contact the technician for more professional technical advice.

Cleaning

When cleaning the wheels, soak the brushes in graphite so that they can easily turn.

Grind the knife twice a season with a metal file or table grinder. Remove the spark plug first. The cutting point is on the side where no oil and/or gas is discharged into the carburettor, as prescribed. After tightening the blade, use a wrench to remove the bolt that holds the blade to the engine shaft. If you are wearing thick gloves for protection, hang a knife on the balancer or a nail in the middle hole.

Start each season with a new spark plug for a quicker start and maximum fuel economy. Before installation, check that each spark plug is correctly positioned.

Stay in the oil change area to prevent the engine from stalling. To start the engine, check that there are no hot liquids in the engine that could contaminate the old butter if released into a bucket or old milk container. After tilting the mower, use a drain plug, oil extractor or dipstick of your choice to really remove the oil. Then replace the plug before filling the engine with new oil. Finally, used engine oil should be properly disposed of in a clean plastic container with a lid and never mixed with other substances such as petrol or paint. Used oil can be sent to a processing centre, a filling station or any other place where used oil is accepted.

Maintaining a clean air filter improves engine performance by keeping the air clean. Cleaning the filter will take some time, but eventually it will have to be replaced completely.

After encountering a foreign object, always stop mowing until you have a complete picture of the mower – even if it seems to continue working as intended. After switching off the engine, the spark plug cable must be disconnected and earthed. Then carefully inspect the entire mower construction for visible damage. Make what you find as you go along. If it’s still good, do it again and make sure nothing gets stuck in his work.

Warranty and Service

Thanks to the additional integration of clutches and drive belts that wear out over time, self-propelled gas mowers generally require more maintenance than propellers. There are simply more components and mechanisms that need to be synchronized with each other. Lawnmower owners can do a lot to extend the life of their mower by offering the same standard service as a gas-powered pusher: sharpen the blades at least twice a season, change the oil regularly, install new spark plugs, clean the air filter and finally replace.

That’s why a long guarantee on every lawnmower is essential. Fortunately, most manufacturers appreciate the peace of mind of their customers – and its impact on future sales – and that’s why a two-year warranty has become the industry standard to address concerns about high repair costs.

Consider it an absolute minimum. In addition, for most major brands, four or five year guarantees are widely available.

Price

Spend at least a little over $100 on a gas-fired lawnmower that is worth returning to your business. To really help you buy the lawn, the TLC it has earned every season for many years, put $400 on the purchase of a pusher or a self-propelled lawnmower and play it safe, so your estimated price range for driving, zero turn or towing is behind your back. Keep in mind that lawnmowers with a start button are almost always more expensive. Whatever the price of the sticker, add up the estimated regular maintenance costs and this figure will show you if that particular mower is worth what you have paid for the next three to five years or more.

Important notes

Market launch

Place the mower on a lawn with plenty of space, free of stones and children’s toys. You can check the oil in a four-stroke engine with the oil filler cap or dipstick before starting, but remember that in a two-stroke engine the oil must be mixed directly with the gas in the correct ratio.

The spark plug must protrude from the side or back of the engine with a thick wire fitted with a rubber cap. When properly attached, the fitting should look like a thick rubber hose attached to a metal rod. If the spark plug is not connected properly, consult the owner’s manual and take the mower to the installer.

If the mower’s carburettor has a light red or black fill button somewhere on the body, press it three or four times in a row to push fuel through the pipes, but do not overfill the engine. If your mower does not have a main button, you can of course skip this step.

When cold starting the mower, the valve must be adjusted to increase the saturation of the air/fuel mixture in the engine and allow the mower to run until it heats up; the valve can then be deactivated after a few minutes. Otherwise, open the choke on the handlebar or mower deck in the middle or high position.

If the mower has a horizontal arm anywhere near the handle, hold it; this is a necessary protection to start the mower and keep it running. When using the kickback starter, grasp the starter lever at the end of the rope or cable and tighten it firmly and quickly. Don’t be surprised if you need a few tries before you start. If the engine does not start or if no sound is heard, this may indicate that the spark plug is not connected properly. Check your fuel tank to make sure the mower is spraying as if it is actually trying to start but cannot ignite completely.

Storage

Installing a lawnmower when it’s not in use isn’t that difficult – it’s more a matter of common sense. Move the mower away from the garage or shed, preferably with a tarpaulin or blanket so that as much dust and dirt as possible does not accumulate. It must be kept dry at all times to prevent rust or condensation from entering and damaging the engine or oil/gas mixture. Not that it’s not obvious, but the further you keep your lawnmower away from any place where children can play, the safer and more efficient it will be.

Cleaning

Your unavoidable maintenance includes cleaning after each use to compensate for the wear and tear of the lawn over a long period of time. Remove all surface dirt from the mower after each use. You don’t have to do much more than blow up or clean up everything you don’t like. If your device has a cover port that connects to a normal garden hose, use it to wash grass, leaves, twigs and other unwanted body parts. If this extra feature is not available, simply use the same hose to manually flush the deck after tilting the mower, so that no fuel or oil is poured into the carburettor. Finally, throw away anything that sticks to the leaf with a stick, but never risk using your hands. Even without electricity, the blades of lawnmower blades remain dangerously sharp.

Exhaust gas

Finally, you may need to purge the wrong gas from the mower to make it work. This is a relatively simple but important learning process.

If you have just used a lawnmower, allow it to cool completely before placing it in the middle of an abrasive plate or other protective material over your working area and remove the gas cap to wipe the inside with a cloth.

Insert the end of the fuel bottle into a large metal container and place the inlet at the other end into the gas tank. Press the piston of the siphon until the gas rises through the inlet tube and make sure it moves freely in the outlet tube, which you must keep far enough into the vessel to prevent the liquid from escaping if it falls out. Take as much gas as possible, wipe the edge of the tank opening with a cloth and put the lid back on. Start the mower and let it run until it stops by itself or the tank dries out.

If you have found a carburettor box for the engine (look for a small metal cylinder), place a small box under the drain plug on a rim under the carburettor and remove the screw to drain the gas completely. In the meantime, wipe the bolt with a cloth. When the carburettor is empty, reconnect it. If you have a removable carburettor, you can drain the gas by removing a screw and filling the contents into the small container below. After wiping off the carburettor, you can attach it to the engine.

Always finish the job by wiping and mowing the work area to clean up any spilled gas and safely dispose of the used cloth. Spread the litter on unprotected surfaces and discard as soon as it has absorbed most of the litter.

What are the best brands of self-propelled gas mowers?

Yes, I have some personal favorites of good lawnmowers, where I will drive friends whenever possible. How kind of you to ask…

MASTER

More than their absolute strength, I’m always amazed at how many Craftsman lawnmowers are made of surprisingly light shells at such affordable prices.

LUZGA

No mower is more reliable than the Husqvarna in general, but you should definitely look for one of your exceptional all-wheel mowers to mow lumpy lawns that don’t seem to offer any simple, level ground.

TROY-BILT

As far as I am concerned, no manufacturer makes a more reliable and efficient electric starter without hitting customers with a sticker.

HONDA

It is simple, if it has an engine, you can bet that Honda will build it until Kingdom Kom delivers excellent performance every step of the way.

Where can I buy a self-propelled lawnmower?

As long as you’re satisfied with honest, reliable customer reviews, photos, weird videos and text descriptions, you can find the world of Amazon lawnmowers online, along with major appliance stores like Tractor Supply Company, Lowe’s and Home Depot, among others. However, if you can try to gain practical experience in a brick and shell shop, if possible. Your eyes can deceive you, but pushing a lawnmower is actually faith.
